The Working of the Radial Shaft
The radial shaft seals are also called the lip seals. They are used in the sealing of the rotary elements like the rotating bore and shaft. The wellendichtring helps in sealing the open loops.
The typical examples of the radial shaft seal include the axle seals, the valve stem seals, the power steering seals, and the hydraulic pump seals. The earlier radial shafts made use of the rawhide as the sealing elements.
The current radial shaft seals make use of the elastomers. The invention of the elastomers saw the replacement of the rawhide industry and added the garter spring which assists in the sealing lip and the compensation of the lip wear. The construction of the seal consists of the spring primary sealing lip that has a point of contact with the shaft.
The two angles form the point of contact with the oil side angle more than the air side angle. These two angles are not the same so as to create a pressure distribution. The running of the seal will be determined by the wetness of the seal and the depth of the slope.
The radial oil seal
The radial oil seals are programmed for the sealing spindles and shafts. Their primary role is to provide the long lasting sealing efficiency. It constitutes of the metal case, the spiraled tensioning spring, and the rubber sealing lip.
They are available either with or without the external dust lips. They come in different versions. Some versions come with the spring. The purpose of such versions is for the use of the helical movements or as a scraper.
Components of the shaft seal
The shaft seal has three fundamental components. The first being the sealing lip. The sealing lip consists of a flexible membrane that ends in an edge. It is made of the elastomeric material and specially designed to wrap around the shaft. This is what causes the sealing action.
The metal case, on the other hand, is designed to provide the shaft seal with the much-needed rigidity. The rigidity is useful for the stable coupling. Last but not least is the Garter spring. It is meant to act as a complement to the critical action of sealing the lip.
Materials for sealing the lip
The materials that are used for the sealing of the lip are mixtures of more than one elastomers coupled with different ingredients such as accelerators, antioxidants, plasticizers, and the reinforcing fillers.
This makes it have properties such as the wear resistance. Low friction coefficient and a high degree of elasticity.
